Imagine sipping on a creamy protein shake that promises health benefits, only to discover it's a sugary concoction that tastes more like curdled milk than a nutritious boost.

Protein is so important in your fitness journey - 100%, but finding ways to get the correct amount of protein can be a challenge which is why I have found myself relying on protein shakes to help boost my protein intake.

Whether you're making a shake after a workout, as a quick breakfast or an afternoon snack, the right ingredients can boost nutrition, improve flavor and keep you feeling full longer.

My Protein Shake Journey

I have experimented with countless protein shake recipes, and unfortunately, 90% of the time, I find myself taking one (sometimes two) sips before pouring it down the drain. However, through this trial and error, I have discovered five key ingredients that I consistently reach for when making a shake.

My Go-To Ingredients

  1. Greek Yogurt

  2. Frozen Berries

  3. Spinach

  4. Chia Seeds

  5. Peanut or Almond Butter

These ingredients have transformed my protein shake experience, making it enjoyable and satisfying!

Greek Yogurt

If you want a thicker, creamier smoothie, Greek yogurt is one of the best additions. It is naturally high in protein while also providing calcium and probiotics that support gut health. The high protein content helps you feel full for a longer time.

Frozen Berries

Frozen berries are one of the easiest ways to add flavor without loading your smoothie with sugar. This one is my favorite. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and mixed berries all pack in antioxidants, fiber and vitamins.

Spinach

I won't deny it, this one was challenging for me. The only green drink I've ever truly enjoyed is the annual Shamrock Shake from McDonald's!

The spinach actually blends almost completely and has a very mild taste. It is a easy way to sneak in a vegetable into your day.

Spinach is a nutritional superhero, packed with iron, folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K – making it a true champion among healthy foods!

Chia Seeds

I'm amazed at how these small seeds are loaded with nutrients. Chia seeds are rich in fiber, beneficial omega-3 fats, and a bit of protein.

They're an excellent addition to your protein shake, and just a small amount goes a long way.

Peanut Butter of Almond Butter

In my opinion, I saved the best for last. The nut butter instantly makes the protein shake taste richer and delicious.

It provides healthy fats that can help keep you energized thoughout the day.

Be mindful of portion sizes, since nut butters are calorie-dense. One tablespoons is plenty.

My Go-To Protein Shake for Beginners

If you're new to protein and want to create a shake or smoothie that suits your needs, try this straightforward recipe:

• 1/2 Cup of Greek Yogurt

• 1 Cup of Mixed Frozen Berries

• 1 Handful of Fresh Spinach

• 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds

• 1 Tablespoon of Peanut Butter

• 1 Cup of Milk (I prefer Fairlife)

• 1 Scoop of Vanilla Protein Powder

(Ultimate Muscle Protein or UMP; My favorite) https://link.amazon/B0ak24tRq

Blend until smooth and enjoy! Protein shakes can be a convenient on-the-go healthy and filling option.

The Bottom Line

Getting used to protein shakes requires practice, and discovering one that suits your tastes involves a bit of trial and error.

By combining quality protein with whole food ingredients like berries, spinach, chia seeds, nut butter and Greek yogurt you can create a simple drink that is filling, delicious and packed with nutrients.

The best protein shake isn't the one with the most ingredients - it is the one you'll make consistently.
